High performance, high practicality. introductionthe nissan altima is a roomy, comfortable, practical mid-size sedan. It's designed to please fewer people, but to please those few more intensely. in this respect the altima reminds us more of mazda's mid-size sedan, the mazda6. Both offer stand-out styling; both surrender some refinement for gains in handling response. In other ways, however, they are diametric opposites: the lean and wiry mazda is the smallest car in this class, powered by a choice of high-winding engines; while the muscular nissan tops the class in both horsepower and wheelbase and is one of the roomiest cars in the class. the altima delivers stunning acceleration when ordered with its 250-horsepower v6, essentially the same engine used in the nissan 350z and maxima. Punch it in any gear and it takes off, with nimble handling and brakes to match its thrust. The high-performance altima se-r adds 10 more horsepower and even more sports appeal. Altima's interior was redesigned for 2005, which resulted in an improved cabin. Altima also received some mild styling enhancements and a slight boost to its v6 for 2005. Air conditioning and a stereo are not included, however. The base model is only available with a five-speed manual transmission. the 2. 5 s 19,500) adds air conditioning, power mirrors, remote keyless entry with remote trunk lock, an eight-way adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, a six-speaker audio system, seatback pockets and a lock for the split rear seat. This is a very nice car, the top-of-the-line altima. the 3. 5 se 23,500), on the other hand, is a performance model, equipped with the v6; five-speed manual transmission; 17-inch alloy wheels; wider, speed-rated tires; a performance-tuned suspension; fog lights; and dual chrome exhaust tips. The se is also available with the five-speed automatic 23,800). Cloth upholstery is standard. A leather package 3,000) includes leather upholstery, bose audio, sunroof, and heated front seats and mirrors. The sport package plus 2,600) includes the sunroof, spoiler, bose premium audio, and xenon headlights. The leather sport package 3,900) combines the leather package with the spoiler and xenon headlights. the se-r 29,550) features a 260-horsepower version of the 3. 5-liter v6, performance-tuned front struts and rear shocks, stiffer front and rear springs, thicker front and rear stabilizer bars, speed-rated 225/45wr18 tires and 18-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist are standard. Unique front and rear fascias and its own rear spoiler, compact fog lights, side-sill spoilers, and large dual exhaust finishers highlight the exterior. Inside, the se-r gets sport leather seats, dark chrome trim, and a three-pod center-mounted gauge package. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but the five-speed automatic is available as a no-cost option. safety features include dual-stage frontal airbags. Optional: side-impact airbags designed to provide torso protection for driver and front passenger and roof-mounted curtain airbags designed to provide head protection for front and rear passengers in a side impact or rollover. We strongly rec. walkaroundthe nissan altima is a big car by mid-size standards, bigger than the current toyota camry and honda accord. Its wheels are pushed to the far corners, giving it a long wheelbase and wide track for stability at high speeds. The long wheelbase leaves plenty of room for passengers, and for large doors to let them in and out. cast in the style of a european sedan, the altima looks more like something from volkswagen or audi than honda or toyota. Yet the altima also has more exterior design detail than the camry or accord, with creased mirrors, integrated foglamps and other subtle cues. Altima's sloping roofline is reminiscent of a coupe. Its high trunk lid is set off by bold round taillights, turn signals and backup lights set in a triangular-shaped cover. nissan subtly restyled the altima for 2005 for a more aggressive look. The new hood looks more athletic, with a muscular bulge suggesting a powerful engine. A smoother front fascia and smoked headlamps add to the bold impression, and tooth-like ridges molded into the horizontal grille bars tighten altima's kinship with the more exotic maxima. Altima's grille is large by contemporary standards, but not the least bit awkward. altima is assembled with a one-piece bodyside structure for more consistent build quality. Altima has gained on camry and accord in exterior build quality and nissan claims panel-fit accuracy within 1. 0 mm. interiorthe nissan altima feels spacious inside and that's no illusion. It ranks at or near the top of the class in interior roominess. There's more front legroom here than in all but the largest vehicles on the road. The front seats are quite comfortable and large enough for larger bodies. Changes included a new instrument panel, a new center stack and a new center console. Seat materials, trim finishes and the headliner were upgraded and new chrome accents were added. Overall it's a vast improvement over earlier models and closer to toyota and honda levels, but still not quite there. The cloth upholstery is okay and the material used on the dash is nice, but the lids on the front of the center console are flimsy. the altima is a comfortable car, however, and driver visibility is excellent. The dashboard is set relatively low, with a binnacle directly in front of the driver containing speedometer, tachometer, and water temperature and fuel gauges. The instruments glow orange in the dark, offering less interference to night vision. The three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes to help optimize driving position. The shifter on models with manual transmissions is somewhat long, with long throws. the available navigation display is located at the top of the center stack and it works well. Audio controls are mounted high on the center stack for easy access. At the top are two rows of buttons, used to control audio, trip computer, and navigation functions, with a small joy stick in the center. Heating/air conditioning control knobs lie directly below and are easy to locate with minimal distraction. air conditioning vents are flush-mounted on the dash. Seams for the passenger-side airbag are invisible, cleverly hidden in a large expanse of unembellished dashboard surface. The center console has cupholders large enough for one-liter bottles. A power port inside the center console storage area is useful for cell phones. There's an adjustable elbow rest. The parking brake is a proper handbrake, located front and center. The windows can be opened with the remote key fob (by holding down the unlock button), a nice feature on hot summer days. the rear seats are supportive and comfortable, with good legroom and sufficient headroom. A 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit comfortably behind a 6-foot, 4-inch drive.

Named after the region of italy known for its famous glassware, the murano reflects an emphasis on refinement and over-the-road confidence over off-road ruggedness. the murano is a good example of a crossover vehicle: it's designed to haul cargo like a sport-utility, but ride and drive like a car. However, this crossover handles better than a honda pilot or toyota highlander, and it drives more like a sports sedan. murano integrates aerodynamics and high fashion, with a sleek front end, smooth lines from front to back, and a greenhouse that slopes rearward, ending in a large but graceful c-pillar. Inside, nissan resisted the temptation to cram in three rows of seats like the highlander and pilot do. It comes with a continuously variable transmission, a high-tech automatic that's smooth and responsive while offering superior gas mileage within its class. Murano shares basic underpinnings with the nissan altima and maxima sedans. (murano is not at all related to the infiniti fx, a popular misconception.) all-wheel drive is available for the murano, giving it good grip and stability in wintry weather and hard rain. for 2006, the murano's styling has been freshened with a new grille design, a chrome lower grille insert and other subtle changes. All models are powered by the 3. 5-liter v6 mated to a continuously variable transmission (cvt) that nissan calls the xtronic. All murano models come with features above the class standard. starting with the se, standard equipment on all three versions includes dual-zone automatic temperature control, a high-power am/fm/cd audio system, power windows with auto up/down feature in front, keyless remote entry, reclining rear seats, and large 18-inch alloy wheels. the sl upgrades with a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, upgraded audio with steering wheel controls, a compass, a garage door opener, automatic headlights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power outlets, fog lights, and an theft alarm. Sl and se models wear new brushed aluminum trim on the rear bumper and chrome accents along the sides. the se comes with a firmer sport-tuned suspension, a manual shift mode, high-intensity xenon headlights, styled alloy wheels and dark-silver lower bumpers. safety features include dual-stage frontal air bags with seat belt sensors, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-cabin curtain style head-protection airbags, and active front head restraints. Rollover sensors for the airbag system activate the airbags in the event of a pending rollover. The s can be purchased with a convenience package 800) including a 10-way adjustable driver's seat, roof rails, adjustable pedals, and a cargo cover and net. The sl and se models can be further upgraded with a premium package 1,550), which adds a more powerful stereo with subwoofer and auto volume control to the contents of the convenience package. The sunroof package 2,550) adds an electric sunroof to the premium package. A dvd navigation system 1800) is also available. The rear-seat dvd entertainment package 1,720) comes with a seven-inch drop-down screen, remote control and two wireless headsets. A chrome wheel package is available for sl models 1,200). walkaroundthe murano is named after the glass sculpted in the islands near venice. The glass is known for its beauty as well as for the high-tech methods used in its production. In the nissan murano, this duality is most obvious in the styling. the murano is designed to blend the look of a car and a truck. The top half of the body is sleek like a car, while the bottom half is bulky like a truck. Overall, the look is much sleeker than tall box-shaped suvs. At first it looks a bit over the top, but most people quickly get used to it and traditional suvs start looking boxy and dated by comparison. big 18-inch wheels contribute to murano's muscular styling. Sculpted, vertical-stack projector headlights define the front corners. The highly styled rear hatchback is made of reinforced plastic because steel won't bend easily in such a complex shape. The hatch is heavy, however, and takes some effort to raise and lower. The windshield and front side windows are tinted green to deflect uv radiation; the rear side windows and backlight are darkly tinted for privacy. as its looks suggest, the murano is an aerodynamic machine. Details in the design help it slip quietly through the air. The colors were chosen carefully to promote a luxury look. interiorclimbing into the nissan murano couldn't be easier. The seating position and steering wheel orientation make it feel more like a car than an suv. The view rearward isn't compromised as much as we had expected by the stylishly thick d-pillars. the front seats are comfortable and supportive, even for people well over six feet tall. Petite drivers are also able to get comfortable, with the power-adjustable pedals that help ensure a good driving position without getting too close to the steering wheel where the air bag is housed. The overall interior fit and finish are good. The gauges have a classy grayish background with amber backlighting. Steering wheel audio controls are illuminated. a prominent pod juts from the center of the murano's dash presenting audio and climate controls. A new seven-inch color screen has been made standard to enhance usability and access to vehicle information. Controls on the steering wheel allow easy volume adjustments. customers can order either xm or sirius satellite radio as a dealer-installed accessory. A large center console separates the front seats, enhancing the sports sedan feel of the interior. The center console features a two-tiered lockable storage box with enough room for a laptop computer or a purse, cell phone, sunglasses, coins, cups and bottles. The door pockets flip out for easy access, and there's a hidden storage tray and two bins under the cargo floor. There are also three power outlets: front-passenger footwell, center console and rear. the cabin is roomy and feels airy.
