A wide range of models is available, but all are comfortable cruisers, offering drivers a friendly haven from traffic and bumpy freeways. the model line ranges from the sporty and entertaining 2. 7-liter charger se to the 425-hp srt8. Between them are 3. 5-liter v6 and 5. 7-liter v8 models. The charger has all the pavement-ripping, gut-thumping power of the old muscle cars, but it's packaged with modern creature comforts and tempered by handling competency. Put another way, it rides, turns and stops as well as it goes. the charger is fun to drive and enjoyable for just cruising along. It's perfectly in its element when making time on a freeway. It is a big, heavy, full-size sedan measuring more than 16 feet in length and tipping the scales near two tons, but it's responsive and entertaining. for 2008, the charger gets minor interior design changes and two new entertainment options. Newly available are sirius backseat tv for the rear entertainment system, and dodge's mygig, a 20 gigabyte hard drive that holds songs, pictures, and navigation system map information. The mygig multimedia infotainment system adds a navigation system. walkaroundthe charger recalls the 1966 dodge coronet. Despite its fastback, two-door hardtop styling, the old charger was somewhat blocky, with a squared-off front end, superficially sculpted slab sides and an equally vertical backside. There was the barest hint of a so-called coke bottle look, with the body sides slightly pinched in about where there would have been a b-pillar. Not until the 1968 model year was any attention paid to moving the car rapidly through the air with minimal disturbance. The 2008 charger starts at much the same place on the automotive styling evolutionary curve. the same design team that parented the chrysler 300 and dodge magnum birthed the charger. The charger is built on the same platform as those two, but is three inches longer overall. with this legacy, the upright silhouette comes as no surprise. The front end tilts forward as if it's leaning into the wind, specifically to recall the brutish, pre-aero-age styling of its muscle car era namesake. dominating the front of the car are the trademark dodge crosshairs, chromed on the sxt and r/t, body-color in the se and srt8, and flat black on the daytona. Compound halogen headlights peer out under hooded, almost scowling brows. A thin, trifurcated air intake slices across the lower portion of the front bumper. The daytona and srt8 wear a flat-black chin spoiler. Fog lamps on the sxt and higher models fill small, sculpted insets at the lower corners. from the side, the demi-fastback roofline and glasshouse look more grafted onto the somewhat fulsome body than a natural extension of the overall styling theme, as if the designer were trying to make a sedan look like a coupe. The beltline arcs softly back from the headlights, where it droops slightly, to about the midpoint of the rear side window, then kicks up over the rear quarter panel, visually bulking up the car's already hefty haunches. the rear perspective shows a tall, almost vertical backside, with large taillights draped over the upper corners. A modest, kamm-like lip stretches across the trailing edge of an expansive trunk lid, atop which sits a lift-suppressing spoiler on the daytona and srt8. A recess in the bumper holds the license plate. On the se and sxt a single exhaust tip exits beneath the right-hand side, while the v8-powered models sport chrome-tipped, muscle car-idiom, dual exhausts. interiorinside, the dodge charger has much in common with the magnum, which is essentially the wagon version of this car. the instrument cluster arrangement, which is slightly redesigned for 2008, is pleasantly informative. The big round speedometer and tachometer share the top half of the steering wheel opening, with fuel and coolant temperature gauges down in the left and right corners. The climate controls are conveniently positioned beneath the radio and are easy to operate. the cruise control stalk has been moved from the 10 o'clock to the 4 o'clock position for 2008, making it more intuitive to use and eliminating the annoying tendency to hit the cruise stalk when signaling a turn. the standard fabric-covered seats are comfortable, with adequate thigh support and side bolstering. Stepping up to the performance seats in the option packages gets more pronounced bolsters, which is good for those rare times when a twisty two-lane beckons, but not as good for climbing in and out of the car every day. Thanks to the sedan-spec wheelbase, there's plenty of rear seat room, too, even with the front seats at their rearmost positions. The thick front pillars are designed to meet roll-over standards, which makes checkin. 2002 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dodge strategically promotes the dakota as the biggest, most powerful, most capable compact pickup on the market. Or as shakespeare might have put it: a dakota by any other name would be precisely the same size. While some competitive extended cabs feature short auxiliary doors behind the main doors, the dakota club cab comes with two doors only. regular and club cabs are offered in three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $14,810; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $15,855; and slt regular cab sells for $16,415. Sport adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. Slt comes with v6 power, gray fascias, and bright bumpers and grille. Quad cabs start at the sport level, powered by the v6. the new sxt model, available only with a regular or club cab, adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear stabilizer bar, cloth bucket seats, carpeting, and special graphite metallic exterior trim. A 120-horsepower, 2. 5-liter inline-4 is standard on regular and club cabs in base or sport trim. Slt's and all quad cabs come with a 175-horsepower 3. 9-liter v6. Rounding out the option list are a 235-horsepower 4. 7-liter v8, and a 5. 9-liter v8 that produces 245 or 250 horsepower, depending on model. Manual transmissions are offered with all but the 5. 9. The other is a full-time system that emphasizes all-weather traction. the r/t group adds $2,190 to the cost of a regular or club cab, and features a high-performance version of the 5. 9-liter v8. R/t's also pack aggressive (255/55r17) blackwall tires on 17-inch aluminum wheels, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, a lowered (by one inch) handling-oriented suspension, limited-slip rear differential, bucket seats, a floor console, fog lights, special trim and a long list of convenience items. walkarounddakota shares its freightliner styling with the full-size dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burly look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way. regular and club cabs have a 6-foot 6-inch bed, a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-foot 3-inch bed. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender, an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. Sometimes the bed extender works great, but a lowered tailgate with a mesh opening won't hold dirt back like longer bed with a solid tailgate. The instrument panel was made easier to reach and easier to use, and almost all of the switchgear was changed. A notable example is the rotary dial for the electrically controlled transfer case, replacing the lever used previously. Door trim and carpeting were updated, as were the center and overhead consoles. Leather became an option on quad cabs, where it costs an extra $580 in 2002. A three-channel home security transceiver joins the option list. visibility from inside the dakota quad cab is outstanding. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward. The quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The wide console works well as a storage area for miscellaneous junk, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. The driver and front seat passenger had tons of legroom. the rear doors open wide - about 37 inches. Getting in and out of the rear seat is aided by the fact that there is no cutout for the rear wheels (like there is in many sport-utilities). But a lack of clearance for heads and feet make getting out a bit more difficult than it should be. the rear seating area in the dakota quad cab is roomier than that of any other compact truck. But that only makes it the best of a bad lot, and legroom, particularly, is limited. There's good knee room, and plenty of headroom, but not a lot of foot space, so don't plan on stretching out. As in most of the smaller ``crew cab' pickups, the rear seat back is bolt upright and not very comfortable. Children and smaller adults should be happy enough back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. It also featured a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. We hit one particularly sandy section and switched easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we switched into 4wd-low and easily walked up a good 15 degree grade. only on washboard stretches of hard-packed dirt roads did the back end tend to lose its grip at speed - and even then only in two-wheel-drive mode. That's a fault common to most unloaded pickups. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns. the brakes deliver straight and true stopping power. This transmission was designed in tandem with the 4. 7-liter engine and they are precisely calibrated to each other, with an onboard computer continuously adjusting the shift pattern to match the way the truck is driven. A 3. 0:1 low ratio provides plenty of leverage to get rolling, followed by a shift up into a torquy 1. 67:1 second. But a kickdown from direct-drive third engages a higher-speed second ratio of 1. 50:1, which dodge says is better for passing. The modern classic muscle car. introductionthe dodge challenger brings muscle car performance and styling to everyday driving. The challenger harkens back to 1970 and the current generation, launched as a 2008 model, amuses and delights us. For 2011, there are significant changes to engines and suspensions as well as changes to the interior. the 2011 challenger se boasts substantially more power than last year's model yet significantly better fuel economy at the same time thanks to an all-new 3. 6-liter v6 engine. The new pentastar v6 produces 305 horsepower, 55 more than the engine it replaces, and 268 foot-pounds of torque. It comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift capability, an improvement over last year's 4-speed automatic. Fuel economy has improved and the 2011 challenger se now gets an epa-rated 18/27 mpg city/highway. the 2011 challenger r/t benefits from a new cold-air induction system for its 5. 7-liter hemi v8. The v8 is rated at 372 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque with the 5-speed automatic, or 376 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque with the optional 6-speed manual. The hemi uses a multiple displacement feature that switches off cylinders to save fuel, but epa ratings are 16/25 mpg with the automatic and 15/24 mpg with the manual. We think the challenger r/t is the sweet spot in the lineup. It can be used as a daily driver with a more compliant suspension than that of the srt8 yet it's sportier and more fun than the se. Challenger r/t competes with the mustang gt and camaro ss. 2011 challenger se and r/t models benefit from new suspension geometry and tuning, electro-hydraulic power steering, a new front air dam, larger wheels, revised gauges, a new steering wheel, improved seats, new rallye and super sport packages, and more standard equipment. the 2011 challenger srt8 392, as the srt8 is now called, is named after its hemi v8 in reference to its 392 cubic-inch displacement and that of the legendary hemi engine of the late 1950s. The 2011 challenger srt8 392 comes with a new 470-hp 6. 4-liter hemi v8 that includes cylinder deactivation technology. The 6. 4-liter engine replaces last year's 6. 1-liter and power increases from 425 to 470 hp and torque is up from 420 to 470 pound-feet. Epa ratings are 14/23 mpg with the 6-speed manual and 14/22 mpg with the 5-speed automatic. The 2011 challenger srt8 392 also gets revised front end styling, new gauge graphics, quicker steering, and revised suspension tuning. The srt8 comes with big brembo brakes, the firmest suspension and a limited-slip rear differential. We found the srt8 392 fast and stable. Everyone seems to like the challenger. We've driven all the models and like all of them. They all have their own merits but there are distinctions. the cabin is mundane. Like muscle cars of the past, the challenger is based on a sedan and the interior borrows heavily from existing materials. Climbing into the back seat is a struggle and legroom is tight but there's plenty of headroom, so it's fine for children and teens. lineupthe 2011 dodge challenger se 24,670) comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 and 5-speed automatic transmission. Also offered are sirius satellite radio 195), uconnect phone 395), sunroof 950), media center 430n 790) with sirius satellite radio, garmin navigation system, sirius travel link, 6. 5-inch touchscreen, and 30-gigabyte hard drive; and sound group ii 1,565) with 368-watt amplifier; seven boston acoustics speakers with subwoofer, 6. 5-inch touchscreen, and 30-gigabyte hard drive. challenger r/t 29,670) features a 5. 7-liter hemi v8 with a 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic 995).
