1998 cadillac seville review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Cadillac has been billing seville as an import-fighter ever since the nameplate was introduced back in 1975. But until now, its traditionally domestic design has done little to crack the market segment dominated by european and japanese brands like lexus, bmw and mercedes-benz. while it may be difficult to see much new in the seville, this car was completely redesigned and re-engineered for 1998. It's a front-wheel drive car competing against a field of superb rear-wheel-drive performance luxury sedans. but there are plenty of things that play in seville's favor. The seville is no exception. though barely a body panel is held over from the last-generation seville, the new one bears an unmistakable family resemblance to the previous model. A close inspection reveals the differences. The nose is more refined, with jewel-like, wrap-around projector headlamps and a slightly less audacious egg-crate grille. Bumpers are more subtly integrated into the overall body. Many of the old car's hard edges have been softened, yielding a much more slippery drag coefficient. the new styling speaks of performance, from its aggressive stance to its wide-mouthed dual exhausts. though the seville's look is unabashedly american, there are clear concessions to the international market. The car is three inches shorter than last year's model in u. Trim, eight inches shorter in the version earmarked for europe and japan. That should enhance its appeal in overseas markets, where crowded city streets and costly fuel mean bigger is not necessarily better. though a bit shorter overall, the 1998 seville has a one-inch longer wheelbase. It also has a 2-inch wider track. The longer wheelbase and broader stance, along with a more sopisticated suspension, help improve ride and handling. under seville's skin is a platform where much attention has been paid to torsional rigidity, which is up an amazing 53 percent. This translates into a whole lot less shaking and hopping on rough roads. It also allowed seville's engineers to design a suspension that more precisely controls the movement of the wheels, which results in much better handling. The new structure also means the seville handily meets all present and planned crash standards anywhere in the world. interiorthe new interior, wrapped in leather and wood, is warm and inviting. Tasteful use of richly-grained zebrano wood is very attractive. Designers like to use the term 'organic' to describe the way one design element flows into another. the center console, sweeping up into the instrument panel, houses a handsome radio and climate control center. The instrument panel also illustrates how cadillac engineers have been influenced by their asian competitors. The gauges use a three-dimensional vacuum fluorescent, or vf, display that is as easy-to-read as it is sophisticated. the bose 4. 0 sound system is an example of how seville makes extensive use of computer technology to enhance both driving attributes and creature comforts. It's something audiophiles would be wise to consider. It punches out up to 425 watts of music power through its eight speakers, including a 12-inch subwoofer. Front seatbelts are anchored to the seat so they fit more precisely and feel much more comfortable to wear. an optional adaptive seating system is designed to measure a body's pressure points and then automatically adjust 10 strategically-placed air cells in the seat cushion. It's both comfortable and less fatiguing on long drives. there's an extra 1. 7 inches of headroom in the new model, and slightly more shoulder room. But the shorter body means a slight loss of rear leg room. gm's optional onstar system includes a cellular telephone and a global positioning satellite receiver that constantly tracks the vehicle's position. The center's advisors can call for a tow truck. They can transmit a signal to unlock the doors. It provides admirable thrust, whether accelerating from a standstill or passing another vehicle on the interstate. But cadillac makes up for that lapse with the performance shift algorithm, which comes on the sts model. Hammer the accelerator and it will mimic the aggressive shifts associated with driving a stick. To optimize ride-and-handling, it's constantly responding to changing road conditions by altering the damping rate of each individual shock absorber. the front suspension is lighter than before, yet it provides increased wheel travel. A new multi-link rear suspension is a modified semi-trailing arm setup designed to control wheel angles for predictable response in emergency or hard cornering maneuvers. now add in the stabilitrak system. It uses a special accelerometer to sense even a minor skid. Seville's steering system is linked to the those same sensors. As a result, steering effort is altered according to how aggressively a driver takes a corner. summarycalling the new seville 'credible' might come across as a backhanded compliment, but it's not meant that way. At last, cadillac builds a world-class luxury car. introductionthere's a new game in town, and the 2005 cadillac sts is writing the rules. The result is smooth, efficient power. All-wheel drive can be had as well, putting the sts head to head with the best of the world in the handling competition. There's much more in the hardware and technology arenas, but enough of the gearhead stuff. sts is blessed with cadillac's best interior ever, with comfortable but supportive seats that are infinitely adjustable, ample storage space, and superior sound systems. Most important, state-of-the-art occupant safety is standard. cadillac's top management rolled the dice. It empowered its stylists and engineers to create an all-new sts, one designed and outfitted from the tires up with one goal in sight: a car meant to bring as much joy and pleasure to the driver as it does comfort and convenience to the passengers. If the 2005 sts is any gauge, there's new life in the wreath and crest. lineupthe 2005 cadillac sts is a five-passenger sedan with a choice of engines, a v6 and a v8. Each gets its own, appropriately calibrated, five-speed automatic transmission. A more elaborate package adds heated rear seats, six-disc cd changer with navigation system, satellite radio (with three months' trial service), wood/leather trimmed steering wheel, power moon roof, rear spoiler, polished aluminum wheels, performance brakes, limited-slip rear differential, tire-pressure monitor and variable assist steering 6,205); a heavy-duty cooling package 150) can be added to this. Standalone options include a power moonroof 1,200) and an engine-block heater 100). Two of the nine exterior paints, line red and diamond white, cost extra 995). checking the first option box on the v8 order form gets the top-level stereo and navigation system, the satellite radio, high-intensity discharge headlamps with washers, cadillac's magnetic ride control suspension, the wood/leather steering wheel, moon roof, tire-pressure monitor, a rear spoiler, polished aluminum wheels, rain-sensing wipers, performance brakes and limited-slip differential 11,065). The second box adds unique aluminum wheels, tuscany leather seating surfaces, heavy-duty cooling system, variable assist steering and w-rated michelin tires 2,050). All-wheel drive can be added only to this latter package 1,900), while adaptive cruise control is available with either or both 2,300). A performance handling package 795) with special springs and shocks is available with rear-wheel drive but not all-wheel drive. The moonroof, engine block heater and extra-cost paints are also available on the v8. a full spectrum of occupant safety features is standard, including dual, two-stage frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and front-and-rear side curtain airbags. It is strikingly dissimilar to its immediate predecessor, the 2003 seville sts. The new model's design is the latest example of cadillac's new art & science design motif. Only the grille pretends to keep faith with any of the old seville's softer, rounder shapes and lines. yet the sts is recognizable in its striking similarity to the new cts. The sts and cts are indistinguishable to the casual observer even when parked side by side. Both cars present only minimally different iterations of the sharp angles and almost painfully flat planes we first saw in the evoq coupe concept. We now encounter examples of the art & science design theme almost daily in the srx sport utility and xlr sports car. The now familiar theme can be seen to a lesser degree in the forward quarters of the big escalade sport utility. the similarity between cts and sts runs deeper than the sheet metal. They both ride on the same platform, for instance. The wheelbase of the sts is only three inches longer than that of the cts, and its body is six inches longer. That means the new sts has much shorter overhangs, less metal hanging out over the front and rear wheels, and that makes for better handling, improved stability and better looks. all that said, there's no mistaking the new sts for anything but a new cadillac. Viewed head on, the trademark egg-crate grille and stacked headlamps are starkly functional in appearance. No wasted motion or volunteer excess there, to be sure. from the side, the body's crisp lines draw an almost box-like silhouette that somehow still looks aerodynamic. Recessed in the boot's rear vertical is a trapezoidal inset, long enough for european-spec license plates, housing large backup lights at the left and right extremes. American-tradition dual exhausts exit below and at each end of the rear bumper. The optional rear spoiler, running the width of the trunk lid, adds stabilizing rear downforce without spoiling the look. interiorthe interior of the new sts is much more welcoming than the exterior, with soft leather surfaces complemented by warm wood accents. Those wood accents are not standard, but we much prefer them over the standard brushed aluminum trim, which looks and feels cold and reflects sunlight to the point of annoyance. Get the wood. seats are refreshingly supportive, for a cadillac, without being overly firm. Arm rests and head restraints are a degree or two softer than the cushions and side bolsters, boosting the comfort factor a couple notches. All essential controls are within easy reach, although there could be more clearance between the lower door panels and seat bottom to access the front seat adjusters. For this reason, we were especially grateful for the seat memory feature, which often saved us from having to reach down there. The interior is roomy, fitting in between the marginally smaller cts and externally larger 2003 seville. instruments are easily scanned, white-on-black round analogs, with a large nested tachometer and speedometer between the smaller fuel and engine temperature gauges. The speedometer changes between english and metric electronically, so there's only one set of numbers around its circumference. Cruise control and running lights are managed via a stalk on the left side of the steering column, windshield wipers and washers with a stalk on the right. Buttons in the steering wheel spokes provide redundant controls for audio and driver information functions. The front center console is deep and wide and pre-wired for cellular and bluetooth (to wirelessly tie the cell phone into the car's audio system allowing hand-free operation). The glove box, though, is barely sufficient to hold the navigation dvd case and owner's manual. Two cup holders are provided front and rear. The trunk is fully lined, with articulated, gas-pressurized struts. fit and finish are top grade, with notably tight interior trim tolerances. Careful attention was paid to reducing noise, vibration and harshness, with remarkable and commendable success. Specially laminated windshield and front door glass, wind tunnel-tuned outside mirrors and high-density/low-mass sound-deadening padding combine to deliver the quietest interior cadillac's delivered in memory. driving impressionit's sometimes said patience is its own reward. For those who've been waiting, lo these many years for cadillac to deliver on the promise of the original sts, this has been small comfort. Now, however, the time has come. At last, the sts is everything it should have been from its inception, and more. th. Luxury, serenity and peace of mind. introductionthe cadillac dts is a full-size luxury car with full-size american power and a warm, spacious interior. This is a rational luxury car, easy to operate in addition to being large and luxurious. We like that. underway, the dts has impeccable road manners. It handles surprisingly well given its size. Crisp handling and good grip inspire driving enjoyment with composure on winding roads. It takes turns with poise and dignity, making it an enjoyable steed when the road goes curvy. A high-output version that makes 292 horsepower is optional. changes for 2010 are limited to two new colors: vanilla latte and tuscan bronze chromaflair. The current-generation dts was launched as a 2006 model, sporting fresh body lines, a redesigned interior, upgraded running gear, and suspension refinements. It replaced the 57-year-old deville nameplate. lineupthe cadillac dts is available with six-passenger or five-passenger seating. Lane departure warning and side blind zone alert are available on select models. walkaroundlargest in the cadillac lineup, the dts is a big car. Its overall length of 207. 6 inches makes it five inches longer than the escalade full-size suv, and nearly a foot longer than the sts, cadillac's next-largest sedan. It's also measurably longer than either a bmw 7 series or the latest long-wheelbase mercedes-benz s-class sedan. It's also quite wide. despite its size, however, the clean forms of the dts give it an international look. With its vertical headlights and taillights and its egg-crate grille, the dts has acquired the design heritage of the cadillac family and adapted it to 21st-century reality. It acknowledges tradition, yet remains fresh and modern. The fenders provide a purposeful stance, and the profile is slightly wedge-shaped. Seventeen-inch machined aluminum wheels come standard, 18-inch wheels are available, and those wheels can be ordered chromed. The overall look is brought together by cadillac's characteristic spline line, which rises from the top of the front fender, runs along the lower edge of the side windows and then flows over the rear fender. cadillac boasts that the dts has some of the tightest production tolerances in the world, and it certainly looks the part of a well-honed luxury machine. The panels fit well, the paint is glossy and blemish free, and overall the dts wears its bulk well, like a big but athletic guy in a finely-tailored suit. The quality of gm cars has been improving, and cadillac scores well in quality surveys. interiorthe dts cabin is roomy and luxurious. Leather and wood abound, along with chrome accents, creating a handsome, upmarket environment. Low-gloss surfaces, with a three-dimensional grain, were chosen for the upper instrument panel and upper doors in order to reduce glare and absorb sunlight. the base leather is called nuance. A suppler, semi-aniline tuscany hide is optional. The nuance interior benefits from fitment of a material crafted from a vinyl/silk blend for seatbacks and armrests. Instruments use white-on-black led readouts for speedometer, tachometer, fuel and temperature gauges. on five-passenger models, the center console between the bucket seats houses the shifter and storage bins. On six-passenger models, the shifter is mounted on the steering column to accommodate the front bench seat, which has an integrated center armrest that transforms from a back cushion into a console with two levels of storage. the cabin has a spacious feel and good sightlines for driver visibility. The center stack design is attractive and the controls are easy to see and use. A dark argent finish surrounds the radio and hvac control heads, which are set flush into the console for a well-integrated look. Nestled between air outlets, high up in the center stack, is an analog clock, in keeping with other high-end automobiles whose clocks measure time in the traditional way, which we like. the rear seat is large enough for a couple of six-foot-plus males with a few extra pounds of girth; fitting a smaller fifth passenger between them is no problem. The seatbacks are nicely raked for long-range comfort. We especially liked the available tri-zone climate control and the cooling for the front seats. However, the heat and cooling controls are set high up and forward in the door panels, making it hard to see if they've been turned on. It's one of the few ergonomic miscues in the dts; otherwise, there are no difficult or hidden controls or complicated electronic interfaces to mar the luxury experience. Worthy of praise is the ease of using the sophisticated audio system. A variety of language choices are offered by the driver information center. driving impressionsmooth and powerful, the cadillac dts glides over miles and miles of open road in supreme comfort. Under full throttle, both versions of the 4. 6-liter engine emit a mellow bellow that says v8 but not in a flashy way. The electronically-controlled throttle is responsive, yet delivers a smooth, measured rise of power rather than a soul-stirring burst. two states of tune are available, though we don't see dramatic differences between them. Likewise, the performance-tuned suspension comes with bigger wheels and tires and magnetic ride control, a continuously variable real-time damping system, but spring and stabilizer rates are identical to th.
