Optional diesel engine expands lineup. introductionjeep promotes the grand cherokee as a full-size suv, but that's only partly true. In its physical dimensions and towing capacity, grand cherokee is a mid-size, like the ford explorer or chevrolet trailblazer. At the base level, it's priced like a mid-size. It isn't even jeep's biggest suv, as that honor now belongs to the commander. Yet it is instantly recognizable as a jeep. Inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield post. All switches and controls are clearly are labeled and easy to find and use. In back is nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space. anyone familiar with grand cherokees of just a few years ago will find that the chassis is now far more sophisticated, giving the current model much better handling than that of pre-2005 models. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good for crowded parking lots. a wide range of modern engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. The smaller, 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 works quite well, too, and is offered in most states with e85 flex-fuel capability, meaning it can run on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. Even the standard overhead-cam v6 is quite competent. For 2006, jeep expanded the grand cherokee model range with the luxurious overland and the high-performance srt8. For 2007, jeep has added a number of refinements. Most significantly, side-curtain air bags with roll detection are now standard on all models, and all models now offer the parkview reversing camera and active turn signals. Standard tires are wider. Remote start is standard on limited and overland, and optional on laredo and srt8. Cloth upholstery is standard. The hemi is optional 845) on both 2wd and 4wd limiteds. the overland 39,255) comes with the 5. 7-liter hemi, and adds a wood-and-leather steering wheel, real wood accents on the doors and console, two-tone leather and ultra-suede seats embroidered with the overland logo, leather-covered console and armrest, side airbags, dvd-based navigation, sirius satellite radio, parksense rear park assist with parkview reversing camera, a trailer-tow group, and chromed aluminum wheels. Platinum accents highlight the exterior, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless. Overland 4wd 42,690) adds quadra-drive ii. the 3. 0-liter diesel engine is optional on laredo, limited, and overland, with 2wd or 4wd, but was not available for earlier production models. the srt8 40,105) comes with a 6. 1-liter hemi rated 420 horsepower, a lowered suspension and its own electronic all-wheel-drive system. It's actually smaller than a ford explorer. in appearance, the grand cherokee is modern and square-edged, with a fashionably high waistline and small side windows. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris. Revised taillights distinguish the '07; otherwise grand cherokee's outside appearance hasn't changed significantly since '05. while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. Wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless. jeep has reached deep into its heritage to revive the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken. the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more bluff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. In all grand cherokees, the two-tone, dark-over-light theme set by the instrument panel flows into the door trim. the handbrake lever has a spindly, low-quality feel to it, however. new for 2007: the finish on the upper panel has been improved. The laredo has been upgraded here for '07, with the same chrome gauge rings that used to be exclusive to the limited, plus chrome-accented hvac controls and a matching-color bezel (replacing black).

Smooth and luxurious crossover suv. introductionthe nissan murano combines the smooth ride and responsive handling of a car, the cargo space of a wagon, and the high driving position of a sport utility. Named after the region of italy known for its famous glassware, the murano reflects an emphasis on refinement and over-the-road confidence over off-road ruggedness. the murano is a good example of a crossover vehicle: it's designed to haul cargo like a sport-utility, but ride and drive like a car. However, this crossover handles better than a honda pilot or toyota highlander, and it drives more like a sports sedan. murano integrates aerodynamics and high fashion, with a sleek front end, smooth lines from front to back, and a greenhouse that slopes rearward, ending in a large but graceful c-pillar. Inside, nissan resisted the temptation to cram in three rows of seats like the highlander and pilot do. It comes with a continuously variable transmission, a high-tech automatic that's smooth and responsive while offering superior gas mileage within its class. Murano shares basic underpinnings with the nissan altima and maxima sedans. (murano is not at all related to the infiniti fx, a popular misconception.) all-wheel drive is available for the murano, giving it good grip and stability in wintry weather and hard rain. for 2006, the murano's styling has been freshened with a new grille design, a chrome lower grille insert and other subtle changes. All murano models come with features above the class standard. starting with the se, standard equipment on all three versions includes dual-zone automatic temperature control, a high-power am/fm/cd audio system, power windows with auto up/down feature in front, keyless remote entry, reclining rear seats, and large 18-inch alloy wheels. the sl upgrades with a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, upgraded audio with steering wheel controls, a compass, a garage door opener, automatic headlights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power outlets, fog lights, and an theft alarm. Sl and se models wear new brushed aluminum trim on the rear bumper and chrome accents along the sides. the se comes with a firmer sport-tuned suspension, a manual shift mode, high-intensity xenon headlights, styled alloy wheels and dark-silver lower bumpers. safety features include dual-stage frontal air bags with seat belt sensors, front-seat side-impact airbags, full-cabin curtain style head-protection airbags, and active front head restraints. Rollover sensors for the airbag system activate the airbags in the event of a pending rollover. The s can be purchased with a convenience package 800) including a 10-way adjustable driver's seat, roof rails, adjustable pedals, and a cargo cover and net. The rear-seat dvd entertainment package 1,720) comes with a seven-inch drop-down screen, remote control and two wireless headsets. A chrome wheel package is available for sl models 1,200). walkaroundthe murano is named after the glass sculpted in the islands near venice. The glass is known for its beauty as well as for the high-tech methods used in its production. In the nissan murano, this duality is most obvious in the styling. the murano is designed to blend the look of a car and a truck. The top half of the body is sleek like a car, while the bottom half is bulky like a truck. Overall, the look is much sleeker than tall box-shaped suvs. At first it looks a bit over the top, but most people quickly get used to it and traditional suvs start looking boxy and dated by comparison. big 18-inch wheels contribute to murano's muscular styling. Sculpted, vertical-stack projector headlights define the front corners. The highly styled rear hatchback is made of reinforced plastic because steel won't bend easily in such a complex shape. The hatch is heavy, however, and takes some effort to raise and lower. The windshield and front side windows are tinted green to deflect uv radiation; the rear side windows and backlight are darkly tinted for privacy. as its looks suggest, the murano is an aerodynamic machine. Details in the design help it slip quietly through the air. The colors were chosen carefully to promote a luxury look. interiorclimbing into the nissan murano couldn't be easier. The seating position and steering wheel orientation make it feel more like a car than an suv. The view rearward isn't compromised as much as we had expected by the stylishly thick d-pillars. the front seats are comfortable and supportive, even for people well over six feet tall. Petite drivers are also able to get comfortable, with the power-adjustable pedals that help ensure a good driving position without getting too close to the steering wheel where the air bag is housed. The overall interior fit and finish are good. The gauges have a classy grayish background with amber backlighting. Steering wheel audio controls are illuminated. a prominent pod juts from the center of the murano's dash presenting audio and climate controls. A new seven-inch color screen has been made standard to enhance usability and access to vehicle information. Controls on the steering wheel allow easy volume adjustments. customers can order either xm or sirius satellite radio as a dealer-installed accessory. A large center console separates the front seats, enhancing the sports sedan feel of the interior. The center console features a two-tiered lockable storage box with enough room for a laptop computer or a purse, cell phone, sunglasses, coins, cups and bottles. The door pockets flip out for easy access, and there's a hidden storage tray and two bins under the cargo floor. There are also three power outlets: front-passenger footwell, center console and rear. the cabin is roomy and feels airy. 2010 chrysler town & country review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Family-friendly minivan. introductionminivans offer roominess, convenience, versatility and fuel efficiency. There is no more sensible choice for a family with more than a couple of children. Chrysler was the first into this market and, long after other manufacturers have left it, chrysler remains, with the chrysler town & country and the dodge caravan. Of the two, the town & country is generally more upscale, and chrysler bills the town & country as the ultimate family friendly vehicle. the 2010 chrysler town & country is offered with three v6 engines. The base engine, a 3. 3-liter v6 or 175 horsepower, doesn't offer much in the way of either power or fuel efficiency. The 3. 8-liter v6, with 197 horsepower, is adequate for around-town duty, but the best choice is the available 4. 0-liter v6 and its 251 horsepower. But it's a big vehicle, however, and is not nimble. There will be noticeable body lean in the turns and the ride can feel floaty at highway speeds. The honda odyssey and nissan quest are more car-like and sportier to drive. on the other hand, the town & country's entertainment and seating options are the best in the class, matched only by the dodge grand caravan. The standard stow 'n go seating tucks the second-row seats nicely into the floor, and when those seats are up, the floor bins offer storage space. The rear seats fold into the floor on all models, allowing a perfectly flat, voluminous rear storage area. The swivel 'n go option is great for family trips; the second row turns to face the third row with a table in between, making it an activity center for the kids. There are also many entertainment choices. for 2010 there are only minimal changes: the driver and front passenger seats have active head restraints, a rear obstacle detection display is in the vehicle information center, and the 4. 0-liter v6 has a revised final-drive ratio which improves fuel economy. the town & country is a great vehicle for families that need to haul kids and cargo on a regular basis. Also offered are chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite 1,300) with a rearview camera, chrysler's uconnect phone hands-free cell phone link and chrysler's uconnect gps, which adds a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice activation to the uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte hard-drive radio. Three rear dvd entertainment systems are offered. The lx model is available with entertainment group 1 2,120), which has a single rear dvd screen, and also comes with sirius satellite radio, a rearview camera, and a 115-volt power outlet. Entertainment group 3 2,020) for the limited model has two rear video screens with two dvd players, plus sirius backseat tv. A trailer tow group 600) includes heavy-duty engine cooling, trailer wiring harness, and load-leveling rear air suspension. Stand-alone options include two integrated child seats 225) for the second row, a sunroof 995), a power-folding third-row seat 595), and sirius backseat tv 495). Several of the higher line standard features are also available for the lower line models as options. the limited is available with a safety group that includes rear cross path and blind spot alert systems, along with uconnect phone, an ipod control, and auto-dimming mirror 825). The nissan quest, kia sedona, honda odyssey, and toyota sienna are all within a few inches, plus or minus, in overall length. The roof is wide at the top, also contributing to the boxy look. the snout features a large grille with ties to other chrysler products. The body sides have a clean, simple design. The rear liftgate is available with power operation, which is handy, but the rear glass doesn't open separately, which isn't. Chrome accents on the front and rear fascias, door handles, belt molding, and mirrors lend an upscale appearance. interiorthe town & country's competitive advantage can be found on the inside. While ambiance and materials quality are not tops in the class, thoughtful features are. hard plastic dominates the dash and doors. The only padded surfaces are found on the captain's chairs' fold-down armrests, and they are an unimpressive looking rubberized material. The gauges are easy to spot and the various controls are clearly marked. the radio and/or uconnect tunes/gps system is set high on the center of the dash for easy access. With either system, the controls are easy to use, but those on the right side are a bit of a reach for the driver. The cd/dvd changer is also set low, making it a possible distraction to use while driving. The gearshift is mounted between the radio and the instrument panel. Both systems have a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music, pictures, and, with the navigation system, navigation map information. Both systems are capable of holding thousands of songs. front-seat room and comfort are typical for a minivan. The front captain's chairs afford an upright driving position with an suv-like view of the road. There is plenty of head room, and leg room will only be lacking for the tallest drivers. A tilt steering wheel and available adjustable pedals should help most drivers tailor a comfortable seating position, but we'd still like the steering wheel to telescope. the clever features start with the storage solutions. Chrysler provides two glove boxes and some cubbies in the center stack for small items storage. A total of 13 cupholders are found throughout the van, so the whole team has a place to put the root beers after the little league game. The premium center console is more impressive. This top level slides back to reveal a larger storage bin below it. The lower bin also slides back. With both layers pushed back, the top level moves back a total of 21 inches, which allows parents up front to prepare lunch for the kids and pass it back in a safe manner. The premium console is also removable. the rear seating solutions are better yet. All town & country models have a deep well behind the third row, which is a great place to put groceries so they won't slide around. With the rear seats in place, there is an impressive 32. 3 cubic feet of cargo room. All models have a 60/40 split folding third-row bench seat t.
