2007 kia rondo review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new small utility vehicle seats seven. introductionthe kia rondo is an all-new vehicle. Kia calls it a five-door crossover utility vehicle. the rondo is capable of carrying seven adults. Yet it's small, just 179 inches long. That's 2. 5 inches shorter than the six-passenger mazda5. It's a good vehicle for long trips and zooming around town. The seats, cloth or leather, are comfortable. The driver sits relatively high and the rondo feels like neither a car nor a sport utility, which is what a crossover is about. It's rated 20/27 mpg, delivers more thrust more smoothly and adds just $1,000 to the retail price, making it a bargain. kia is the best imitator in the business. Kia designers and engineers look closely at other vehicles, and produce a virtual composite of the best ideas. But there's no lack of originality here, because the rondo is unique. Also available, at least on paper, is a stripper model called the lx 93202 16,395) that comes without air conditioning, remote entry and cruise control. the rondo ex 19,195) adds a higher-grade cloth interior with leather trim, 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome grille, door handles and molding, foglamps, heated mirrors, windshield de-icer, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, lights for the vanity mirrors, and a cd/mp3 six-speaker sound system. Roof rails come standard, but the crossbars to make them functional are optional 200). Like the mazda 5, it takes one small step toward making the minivan obsolete; it will do what a minivan will do, sacrificing a bit of room for more miles per gallon. the rondo looks like a cross between a minivan and a five-door hatchback, and not like a small suv. The chin fascia holds projector-beam foglamps on the ex and a dark horizontal air opening below the grille. the rondo ex has chrome slats in the grille, chrome door handles and a chrome strip on the side, but the cheaper lx, with a black grille and no chrome on the side, looks cleaner. the pillars are black, creating an unbroken glass effect with tinted windows. The rear glass is a simple large rectangle, a bit wider on the bottom and smoothly sloped. It doesn't open separately. looking at the rio from a rear angle, it has an almost bmw-ish resemblance, although the big curved taillamps curve inward like a volvo wagon or suv. because the rondo was designed to be roomy on the inside, the wheelbase is long when compared to the total length, making very short overhangs. The five-spoke alloy wheels are simple, silver, and individual, with each of the five spokes having a stylish twist. although the rondo is new to north america, this is its third generation, having been sold in asia and europe for years. interiorkia says there are 32 different seating configurations in a rondo with the optional third-row seat, counting all the ways the three rows divide, recline and fold. since the roomy seating is what makes the rondo special, let's start with a tale of the tape: leg room in the front, middle and third rows is 41. 3, 38. 2 and 31. 3 inches, compared to 40. 7, 35. 2 and 30. 7 in the mazda5, and 41. 8, 38. 3 and 30. 0 in the rav4. But inches expressed as numbers on a page aren't necessarily conclusive. It's cozy and personal back there; on each side of the third row, there's a good-sized storage bin with a flip-up top like a console, and one cupholder. The second-row seats recline, as well. for cargo carrying, both the second and third rows fold flat quickly; the second-row seat cushion folds forward and the seatback flops down, with the headrest flipping back. Each side of each row folds separately, so a long space can be created on one side of the car, suitable for, say, a short kayak. With all the rear seats down, there's a lot of cargo space. With the third row in use, there's only room behind the seat for a couple of brief cases. The cloth looks better in gray than beige: less fuddy-duddy. The perforated gray leather seats added a real touch of class, along with $1000 to the price. The rondo is a great vehicle for a road trip. in the front seats, the passenger has tons of leg and elbow room, and the comfortable seat reclines if he or she wants to take a nap. The driver's seat is high and affords good visibility; from behind the wheel, the rondo feels like neither an suv nor a car, which is what a crossover is about. The climate ducts are round and balanced, and the knobs are easy to understand and operate. The leather-wrapped steering wheel on the ex feels great, and there are steering wheel controls, as well. there's a storage compartment right on top of the dashboard, more convenient for the driver than the good-sized glovebox because it's easily reachable. The automatic shift lever is located up on the center stack, giving more room for the console between the seats, which is deep and square. Praised for its smooth power, it has double overhead cams with an aluminum block and heads. the v6 only costs $1000 more, however, and gets just one or two less miles per gallon, and comes with a fifth gear in the sportmatic transmission. Saturn built the vue on a long wheelbase, resulting in a roomy interior with back seats that recline slightly for comfort. The seats, including the front passenger seat, fold flat for hauling an eight-foot ladder or other cargo, and a cargo organizer aids organization. the 2005 saturn vue gets upgraded trim inside and out, and it benefits from recent improvements that have brought more refinement and made it more enjoyable to drive. All-wheel drive is available for improved traction and stability in winter weather. the vue is best equipped with the powerful 3. 5-liter v6 and smooth five-speed automatic transmission both built by honda. Performance with the 250-horsepower v6 places vue is among the quickest in its class. Saturn stands out from this crowd with its unique styling and innovative plastic body panels, which resist dents and eliminate corrosion. in terms of safety, vue rates five-star scores, the highest given by nhtsa, for driver and passengers in the goverment's frontal and side-impact crash tests. Windows, locks, and mirrors are manually operated. Air conditioning is standard. Anti-lock brakes and traction control 600) are optional on the fwd model. Abs is optional on awd models, also 600). Unique front and rear fascias, with black air intakes and a chrome exhaust tip distinguish red line vues from other models. walkaroundthe saturn vue is distinctive and visually striking, but it is not necessarily a head-turner. Its exterior design is more sensible than sensational, with looks that are modern and practical, and strong lines that avoid the bubble effect that curvy, cutesy imported mini-utilities share. In terms of size (and price), the vue sits between the honda cr-v and pilot. It's larger than a toyota rav4, smaller than a highlander. the front end is thick and snubbed, with headlamps that ride high atop an exaggerated grille. From the side, the vue is boxy and nondescript, except for its high beltline. Its large, back-end liftgate with floodlights provides easy and efficient access to the rear cargo area. v6 models feature fog lamps, while vues with the v6 and awd ride on larger (17-inch) aluminum wheels. Chrome accents at the front end, once exclusive to the v6, now brighten all vues, while non-red line v6 models have acquired new chrome door handles and belt line molding. polymer body panels provide a rugged, dent-resistant exterior without the clutter of lower-body cladding. Gaps between body panels are more pronounced on saturn vehicles because these polymer panels expand and contract with temperature. Car-height bumpers offer enhanced protection from parking lot damage and help create a smoother appearance. The spare tire is mounted inside the vehicle, which reduces potential damage from low-speed rear impacts. interiorthe interior of the saturn vue has improved greatly over the past two years, with generally better-quality materials than were used in 2003 and before. The new color scheme that debuted for 2004 gives the interior a nicer ambience. Chrome accents brighten the instrument panel and new white-faced gauges that are backlit at night give it a sporty look. The steering wheel was redesigned for '04 as well. A comfort package combines heated front seats with six-way power and lumbar support for the driver. getting inside vue is easy, thanks to wide door openings and a low step-in height. Despite the vue's high beltline, visibility is good, providing a panoramic view. Big mirrors afford good visibility rearward. the switchgear is well designed and easy to operate. Heating and air conditioning controls are straightforward and easy to operate, but look like they came from a compact car. The window switches are located on the center console, making them harder to find quickly than if they were on the door. The vue's interior is still not perfect. The flimsy lid for the center console is still here and we felt a rough edge on the inside door handles. But overall, the '05 saturn vue has a nice interior. the stereo is nicely designed and attractive. Audio options include am/fm/cd with mp3, six-cd changer with mp3. A rear-seat dvd entertainment system allows back-seat passengers to view a movie on a fold-down, 7-inch lcd screen. The system includes remote control and dual wireless headphones, so rear passengers can listen to cds or watch a movie while front-seat passengers can either listen to the dvd program or to the car's regular audio system. the vue is a good vehicle for carrying cargo. The standard 70/30 split folding rear bench seat provides versatile stowage of longer items while carrying rear passengers. Even the front passenger seat folds flat, providing room for an eight-foot ladder or lumber. The nearly flat load floor in the rear is a result of the compact all-wheel-drive system. Of particular note are the configurable cargo spaces. A cargo organizer folds out of the floor to corral smaller objects; it's important to fully snap it closed when put away, however, or it will make a small rattle that disturbs the vue's otherwise quiet ride. There are hooks for grocery bags and two compartments sized specifically for gallon jugs, a welcome convenience on late-night food runs. Tie-downs provide for the safe transport of a wide variety of goods. Three power outlets provide opportunities to plug in toys or tools. A pet net 202) keeps dogs (or whatever else) securely in the cargo bay.

More performance, more nostalgia with new impala ss. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a roomy and practical car, a mid-size sedan that handles well, yet rides more like a big luxury car. Acceleration with the optional 3. 8-liter v6 is more than adequate. But for those who want more, chevrolet has added a supercharged impala ss model for 2004. the chevy impala is calculated to push the nostalgia button. By any other name, it would be an impressive, significant car. But chevrolet chose to honor an icon of the 1960s, not only with the impala name, but with key visual cues. from 1958-65, the impala was the flashiest full-size chevrolet, a real working-man's cadillac, tame transportation in its base form, with performance options available to match its sleek styling. Among those performance options, starting with the '61 impala, was the ss, or super sport, package, featuring unique, sporty trim inside and out. The supercharged 3. 8 that comes with the new ss model makes it quicker still. In any form, the impala feels more responsive than the six-seat sedans from toyota, dodge, ford and buick. The base impala runs with a 3. 4-liter v6 rated at 180 horsepower. The more up-market ls comes with gm's proven and highly competent 3. 8-liter v6, producing 200 horsepower. Abs is available as a stand-alone option 600) with the base 3. 4-liter engine. A driver's-side side-impact airbag 350) is available on all impalas. Xm satellite radio 325) is optional on all impalas. Onstar is available as a stand-alone option 695), but comes with several packages. walkaroundthe 2004 chevrolet impala looks bigger than it is, thanks to its upright windows and roof pillars and relatively long greenhouse. The impala is shorter (by about 4 inches) than a dodge intrepid. The impala matches the intrepid in most front-seat dimensions, but comes up a little short in the rear. the impala's most distinctive styling cues are its headlight and taillight clusters, which use a unique combination of round lights clearly visible from behind trapezoidal covers. Body-color side moldings (new for 2004), aluminum wheels and a small deck lid spoiler help distinguish the ls from the base model. on the ss model, the rear light covers are masked in body color, so only the round lights show through. This conjures memories of the 1960 ('62-'63 particularly) impalas whose round taillights were set in bright metal panels. the reborn ss also wears a lowered front fascia with integral fog lights, unique 'diamond-cut' wheels, dual stainless exhaust tips, and a racy airfoil on the rear deck lid. Again, credit the high roofline with relatively vertical sides. The impala's designers also carefully shaped the rear bulkhead, and moved the front seats slightly outboard. The noticeable distance between the driver and the front-seat passenger contributes to the impression that the impala is huge inside. the seats have been re-styled for 2004, with new upholstery for most models. Base models come with a three-passenger split bench seat in the front, with individual seats and a console offered as an option. They feel like bucket seats. Ls and ss come standard with the individual seats and console. Exclusive ss instrumentation includes a boost gauge to monitor the supercharger, and the ss instrument panel is trimmed in graphite. in all impalas, individual temperature controls allow the driver and front-seat passenger to create their own microclimate. The controls have been redesigned for 2004 for a more contemporary look. Chevrolet claims that airflow is better, too, in both heat and air-conditioning mode, although we hadn't noticed that it was lacking before. the impala's rear seating position is comfortable and relatively high, which makes it easy to get in and out. The impala has good shoulder room in the rear seats, but doesn't have as much headroom or legroom as a ford taurus or dodge intrepid. There are three shoulder belts in the rear, as well as latch child-seat tethers. Press the button and a human operator responds, to provide directions and other assistance. The toyota avalon feels bland by comparison. the view out of the impala is good, helped particularly by the small quarter windows that split the rear pillars. The creases on the hood are useful for judging just where the front of the car is, which in turn is handy for parking a big car in compact spaces. The rear deck lid seems high, however, so care is required when backing up. handling is surprisingly quick and sharp. This is not the wallowing, live-axle barge from the 1960s. Yet the ride is well-damped and does a good job of filtering noise, vibration and harshness. One reason is the impala's extruded aluminum engine-cradle subframe, which isolates vibration while allowing for a more rigid structure. A monster dashboard bulkhead made of light and strong magnesium further enhances to the impala's rigidity, giving the car a robust feel. The engine cradle and dashboard structure lock the steering shaft down tightly, so there are no excess wiggly movements. Chevy says a novel link between the steering column and the steering gear contributes to better on-center feel at the wheel. All impala models benefit from anti-roll bars front and rear, hardware associated with sports sedans. on the road, the steering provides good feedback, better than the toyota avalon's steering. The ls we tested felt particularly precise, with its quicker steering ratio. likewise, the brake pedal feels firm and responsive. Chevy claims the impala ls can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 7 seconds, quick for this class. There's just enough torque steer, fe.
