2005 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Day in and day out, it takes the place of a car or wagon. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. In this respect, it stands apart from the herd of compact sport-utility vehicles, few of which offer true off-road capability. The liberty gives up some refinement and road agility to do this. On the road, it does not ride or handle as well as some of the other small suvs. But the liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need practicality and affordability during the week.  for 2005, the liberty gets a new engine and two new transmissions. With the addition of an advanced, 2. 7-liter common-rail diesel engine, jeep becomes the first midsize suv available with a diesel engine in the u. The diesel is backed by a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A new, six-speed manual transmission replaces the previous five-speed manual.  the liberty renegade has seen the most change for 2005, having been fitted with a flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards. All receive a new front fascia, grille, foglamps fender flares, and body side-moldings. Interior refinements include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics, and improved seat comfort. lineupthe 2005 jeep liberty is available in three trim levels: sport, limited edition, and renegade. The new diesel engine is available on both sport and limited models. A five-speed automatic is standard on the diesel.  sport 19,190) and sport 4wd 20,700) are entry-level models, but receive visual changes for 2005 that add the look of custom details. Air conditioning 850) is optional, however. Power windows and other features can be added as options. The optional v6 is available with manual transmission 850) or an automatic 1,675). The common rail diesel, or crd, is available for the sport 4x4 24,515).  limited edition models offer upgraded interior amenties and a better grade of cloth upholstery. Limited 23,525) and limited 4wd 25,035) come standard with the v6 engine and automatic transmission. Air conditioning is standard. Other options include the trailer tow group 285), a trac-loc locking rear differential 285), power sunroof 700) and sirius satellite digital radio 195). While the tire pressure monitor and simple warning signal are standard, a roof-mounted tire pressure display, which shows the actual pressure at each wheel, is optional 75).  renegade 2wd 22,910) and 4wd 24,520) models come standard with the 3. 7-liter v6, six-speed manual transmission and command-trac part-time 4wd system. Renegade comes standard with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; 16-inch graphite-painted aluminum wheels; power windows, mirrors, and locks; illuminated keyless entry; side rails; and many other features. Renegade 4wd models include rugged tubular side rails and rock rails. Automatic transmission 825) is optional. A premium package 1,240) adds the automatic, power leather seats, and upgraded door trim panels, along with an overhead vehicle information center that allows the customer to program automatic locking, lighting, and other features.  side-impact airbags 490) are optional on all liberty models, and we highly recommend them. Serious 4wd adventurers may want the optional off-road group 765 for sport, $520 for limited), which includes skid plates for the front suspension, fuel tank and transfer case; a locking rear differential; heavy-duty engine cooling; p235/70r16 all-terrain tires; and tow hooks. walkaroundwith its seven-slat grille and round headlights, there's no question the liberty looks like a jeep.  the liberty's body is tall, providing the driver with a commanding view of the terrain ahead. In terms of exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length of 174. 4 inches, the jeep liberty is slightly longer than the ford escape. It's longer than the wrangler, but significantly shorter and lighter than the grand cherokee.  2005 liberty sport models get a new body-color grille, provisions for optional fog lamps, and higher turn lamp locations for more protection from road debris. A flatter hood complements the traditional round jeep headlimps for a distinctive jeep appearance. A new body-color grille is part of the re-styling for 2005, as are large freestanding fog lamps with black bezels, and a new sill to protect the body sides from road blast. Tow hooks and a bright silver metallic applique across the new molded-in color front fascia are standard features. Bolted flares are also molded-in color for more durability and have chrome-plated attachment details. A new luggage side rack with beefieer molded-in color end pieces, and a brushed silver metallic tubular side rail combine to suggest a rugged appearance. The black off-road light bar, standard in prior years, is now an optional feature. Fender flares, combined with the off-road light bar and taillamp guards give the renegade a look that stands apart from the sport and limited models.  a neat feature on all models: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport.  the jeep liberty debuted as a 2002 model. 2003 brought enhancements aimed at improving on-road stability. 2004 brought upgrades in safety equipment, and in comfort and convenience options. Among them: chrysler's enhanced accident response system, which unlocks doors and turns on interior lights five seconds after an airbag deploys. interiorthe jeep liberty comes with a roomy interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo, with 29 cubic feet of usable space behind the second row of seats. Sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with 40. 7 inches of headroom, best in class, according to jeep. Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests, and a grab handle is provided on the passenger's side of the dash. Sport seats we tried in '04 felt firm in the middle, but the side bolsters were too mushy to provide much side support. For '05, they have been noticeably improved through the use of dual-density foam. Also, there's no seat-height adjustment. The side bolsters are still soft, a signal that the liberty is set up more to absorb vibration than sling around corners. The cloth upholstery, with a diamond-plate inspired fabric, feels like it'll hold up well. The renegade front seats are tailored with unique cloth center panels and vinyl bolsters. The front seats in the limited are more comfortable. The grab handle, located on the a-pillar above the steering wheel, is not in the perfect position to help shorter people swing inside.  the liberty's rear seats are comfortable, capable of holding three people. Two adults should be happy here. Cloth Interior✔ AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Player✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

1999 mercedes-benz slk review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A luxury sports car an enthusiast can love. introductiontrue sports car enthusiasts assert that true sports cars must have manual transmissions. The installation of a five-speed manual in the mercedes-benz slk for 1999 silences the purists and does much to raise the little two-seater's fun quotient.  among two-seat roadsters, the slk has two rivals in price, performance and features-the bmw z3 and porsche boxster. The audi tt will soon join these three. All are impressive, all fit into a fairly narrow price window centered in the low-$40,000 arena, all are well-equipped, and all promise as much over-the-road fun as most drivers can stand. Each carries a company name synonymous with quality, engineering and performance. Each comes from a company with plenty of sports car-building experience. walkaroundeven without the three-pointed star, it would be difficult to mistake the slk for anything but a mercedes-benz. It is short but sleek, with a chunky, purposeful look. Nice touches include the faired-in aerodynamic headlights, steeply raked windshield, large rear light clusters, and bumpers tucked tightly against the body. Seven-spoke aluminum alloy wheels-carrying different-size tires front and rear-fill the wheel openings, contributing to the slk's purposeful appearance.  but the slk's most obvious and unusual exterior feature is its power-operated hardtop. It is standard equipment and, being integrated into the car, eliminates the need for a soft top. Five hydraulic cylinders fed from a trunk-mounted pump raise and lower the lid when the driver operates a single switch. When the top is being lowered, side windows retract, latches on the windshield header are released, the trunk lid is raised backward, the roof folds into two halves and slides into its bay, and the trunk lid closes. Naturally, raising the top involves the same steps in reverse. It's a clever piece of engineering. As a single model, fully equipped, with a mere handful of options listed. Among them are a five-speed automatic transmission 900), heated seats 595), metallic paint 600) and a cd changer/portable phone combo 1595). A new $3990 sport package was introduced for 1999 that includes stylish front and rear fascias, side sills and a more assertive wheel/tire package. interiorclimb inside the slk and suddenly it's 1955 again. Mercedes-benz interior stylists have unabashedly opted for a retro look to the cozy cockpit. The three circular instruments-one a speedometer, one a tachometer, and the other a combination fuel level/coolant temperature dial-have chrome rings around ivory faces with black numerals and red needles. Beyond dual front and side airbags, mercedes has developed separate rollover bars behind driver and passenger. A circuit has been added to the airbag system that detects a child's seat mounted in the passenger side and disables the dash-mounted bag in front of it.  the seats, too, are modern as can be. No vintage sports car ever had such comfortable and supportive seats. And no open car of the past protected its occupants from the wind as well the slk's mesh wind deflector, which fits over the rollover bars.  all controls are located in clusters for easy use. Air conditioning and a fine bose six-speaker sound system are standard. The s in the model name denotes sport, and deservedly so. The slk is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in about 7. 4 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph. But the fun comes from much more than its impressive straight-line speed. The key word in assessing the car's fun quotient is balance.  though the l in slk means licht, or light, the slk weighs in at 3000 pounds-not exactly a lightweight. But that's on paper. On the road, it steers, stops, and goes around corners with far less coaxing than its heavier sl cousins. Indeed, it makes a good account of itself on a race track when measured against the porsche boxster and bmw z3. Driver and passenger will be as relaxed at the end of an all-day drive as they were at its beginning and, if there were a few twists and turns along the way, the driver will likely sport an ear-to-ear grin. The antilock brakes and electronic traction control system perform flawlessly.  the third component in the model designation, k, really means kurz, or short, but for u. Versions it can be said to stand for kompressor, or supercharger. Without its supercharger, the slk wouldn't be nearly as peppy. The mechanical supercharger forces air into the mercedes 2. 3-liter twin-cam 16-valve 4-cylinder engine. A version of the same engine (also supercharged for 1999) is used in the mercedes-benz c-class sedan. A variety of high-tech features work with this blower to make the engine both powerful and responsive. Peak power-191 horsepower-is impressive, but the key to this engine's willingness to play is a wide band of peak torque, available from 2500 to 4800 rpm.  behind the engine is a five-speed manual transmission that shifts easily and has just the right gear ratios for enthusiastic driving. The five-speed automatic is just as nice in its own way, featuring adaptive electronics that monitor driving style and tailor the shift time and speed to suit. In the enthusiast-driving mode, for example, the five-speed automatic will shift at the engine's peak power; and it will not shift up into a higher gear when the car is slowed for a corner, keeping it in a lower gear for smoother, better performance coming out of the corner. In more sedate use, it changes gears with remarkable smoothness. Order the manual gearbox anyway. Be a real sports car enthusiast.  perfection? While the muted whine of the supercharger will be music to some, the exhaust note has a slightly agricultural quality to it. In quantifiable ways, the new breed, as exemplified by the slk, is better. Safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly, they represent a high point in automotive design. Mercedes-benz has put a lot of value into the slk, from basic design to sophisticated powertrain to all the standard comfort and convenience features.  currently there are two-and soon there will be three-other teutonic roadsters, each with its own personality. The slk is an impressive achievement, and now meets the purists' criteria for a real sports car. assembled instuttgart, germany. model testedslk 230. 2002 mercedes-benz e-class review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Luxurious and practical. introductionthe mercedes-benz e-class is the company's most popular line. It says mercedes in the way most people understand.  the e-class introduced the trend toward oval headlamps. It's big, square but sleek, smooth, silent and powerful. It's built like a tank with a light touch, and comes out elegant. It's a masculine car where women feel at home. The e430 special edition sedan adds xenon headlamps and heated headlamp washers, a value of over $3,500 also at no extra charge. lineupthree e-class models are available:  e320 sedan 48,450) and wagon 49,650) come with a smooth and highly sophisticated 3. 2-liter v6 rated at 221 horsepower.  e430 sedan 53,850) is equipped with the standard highly sophisticated 4. 3-liter, 275-horsepower v8.  e55 amg 71,350) boasts a whopping 349 horsepower from its 5. 5-liter v8 hand-built by world-renowned tuner amg.  e320 4matic 51,300) and e430 4matic 56,700) come with an all-wheel-drive system, which transfers power to the appropriate wheels when one or more wheels slip for enhanced safety on slippery7 surfaces.  a special option for $1050 is parktronic, which uses sound waves to locate obstacles near the front or rear bumpers. A warning beep increases in speed until contact. Automatic collision notification engages the emergency function (sos) if an air bag deploys. The first year's annual fee of $225 is included in the base price. walkaroundits oval headlamps grabbed attention when the e-class was first introduced. The right-side mirror tilts down when the car is in reverse, for better rearward visibility. The huge and famous single-sweep windshield wiper has a heated washer nozzle so it won't freeze. The remote locking smartkey system has built-in electronic protection against transmitter cloning; the windows and sunroof can be opened by the remote. interiorthe leather interior of the e-class is stately and dignified. The leather is of excellent quality. Burl walnut trim adorns doors, dash, console and shift gate. Steering wheel and shift knob are trimmed in leather. The e-class is one car that is truly about passengers.  the main differences between the models has to do with powertrains. Standard equipment on all e-class models includes 10-way power front seats and head restraints, a power tilt and telescoping steering column, a multifunction steering wheel, memory seating including mirrors and steering wheel position, an integrated garage door opener, and eight-speaker bose sound system with optional cd changer.  much effort has gone into making the cabin climate comfortable. There are dual temperature and airflow controls, an electrostatic dust filter and activated charcoal filter with smog sensor, and rear-cabin air vents. In cold weather, the climate control can recirculate warm air through the interior for up to 30 minutes while the car is parked, drawing on very small amount of coolant. Bunches of interior lights provide illumination, from visor vanities to maplights to door handles. Pockets, compartments and cupholders abound.  the switchgear can be confusing, however. Studying the owner's manual is a good idea because not much is intuitive. The sound and command systems include about 30 buttons the size of a chiclet or smaller, and the only immediately identifiable one is the pwr button. The optional cellular telephone can also be operated from the command panel.  the e-class wagons provide a three-point seatbelt for each of the seven seating positions. With the standard third seat row folded, there's nearly 44 cubic feet of cargo space. With the middle and rear seat rows folded, the space expands to a cavernous 83 cubic feet, more than any other luxury wagon. Room is not sacrificed to carry the standard full-size spare tire, either.  the wagon's middle seat row features a 60/40 split, and the cushions fold forward or can be removed. Removing the right side cushion and folding the front passenger seat forward creates a flat load surface nearly 10 feet long, yet the e-class wagon is just about a half-inch longer than the e-class sedan.  operating the wagon's tailgate is made easy with fully enclosed gas-pressure springs and a power-assisted closing feature. The rear load height is conveniently low at just 22 inches. The standard aluminum roof rails offer sturdy support for the optional roof rack system, which can accommodate a variety of objects, including bicycles, skis or a cargo carrier. Designed for the autobahn, the best acceleration begins at legal limits. This dignified sedan feels most impressive after it's already in outlaw territory. The engine is barely loping at 65 mph. The e-class cars are quite nimble, and light in response. Their handling makes them feel smaller than they are, yet the presence makes them feel bigger than they are. That's no mean feat, and takes masterful engineering. The rack-and-pinion steering is speed-sensitive, and includes a hydraulic damper.  the suspension is slanted toward the soft side so it dampens expansion strips and other unwanted road irregularities, but it never feels so soft that it leaves the driver feeling unconnected to the road. The quality of the ride is consistent with the quality of the rest of the car. This isn't a car meant to be tossed through the curves, but the potential is there. 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Conservative clothing hides a great new truck. introductionchevrolet has completely re-engineered and redesigned its line of pickup trucks. Now called silverado, the new pickup is better than the old one in every respect. It rides better, it handles better, it stops quicker, it's faster and more powerful and it's more comfortable. The new silverado is the most luxurious pickup truck we've ever driven. Where dodge and ford broke new ground in truck design with their ram and f-150 pickups, chevrolet has chosen a conservative design for its new silverado.  chevrolet argues that its customers are so happy with their trucks and so loyal to the brand that they want the new trucks to look just like the old ones. That may be, but we still think they look a bit on the bland side.  underneath its conservative looks is a great truck that has almost nothing in common with the old one. Even the name is new. The old c/k designation has been dropped in favor of the new silverado name. walkaroundthe 1999 chevrolet silverado is built on a completely new frame that is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The front frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape steel. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness.  three new v8 engines are available, in 4. 8-, 5. 3- and 6. 0-liter displacements. All three are based on the new gm small-block architecture that was introduced on the corvette two years ago and shared with the camaro and firebird last year. The doors and door openings are now the largest in the industry, while the cab is the roomiest.  the instrument package looks like a cross between what is found in the new corvette and what was used in the previous c/k trucks. All use pleasant graphics in white on black. The sound system control panel is located above the climate controls. The front seats were equipped with optional heaters. Air conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers.  a compass is incorporated into the lt model's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. At 6-foot 4-inches, i'm often uncomfortable in the back seats of extended-cab pickup trucks, but not in this one. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed through the side door with a wrench and a heave-ho.  about the only thing we didn't like was the design of the interior door handles, which operate in an up-and-in arc and felt loose whenever we used them. We think they need more resistance and a more positive feel. driving impressionwe loved every mile we put on the silverado lt. New mounting and isolation hardware reduces noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. Squeaks and rattles have been completely eliminated, even when flying down a rutted dirt road at 50 mph. This is one strong truck, and its strength lets the suspension soak up and manage all the bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is near-luxury. The steering has a fairly wide dead spot in the center when cruising, which chevrolet says is designed to minimize steering corrections on the highway. That's enough torque to smoke the rear tires at will. The new engine is a much better small-block than before, and we recommend the 5. 3-liter over the smaller 4. 8-liter version.  brakes have been improved substantially over the previous model and it's a welcome improvement. Braking force comes into play only an inch into the pedal travel, a welcome improvement over the mushy pedal on the previous c/k pickup. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking whether the truck is loaded or empty.
