2004 chevrolet tahoe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. When size large is just right. introductionthe chevrolet tahoe is america's best-selling full-size suv. One of the reasons is that it seems to be exactly the right size suv for a lot of americans. It's big enough to haul busloads of people and boatloads of cargo, yet it's more manageable than the super-size suburban. tahoe carries more cargo than a compact or mid-size suv such as the chevy trailblazer or ford explorer. It can carry five passengers and their gear at the same time. Third-row seats are available to increase the capacity to seven passengers, or up to nine when equipped with bench seats throughout. The tahoe makes for a stable towing platform and pulling a trailer is no problem with the optional 5. 3-liter v8. Yet the tahoe is far more maneuverable than a suburban, important in crowded parking lots, underground garages, or when parallel parking, and it will fit into more garages. on the road, the tahoe is smooth and stable, a rock. It has plenty of power and its brakes work well. The cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional, particularly after improvements that were made for 2003. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. In any kind of driving, it's a great choice for someone who needs real carrying capacity. improvements to the tahoe for 2004 further enhance its safety. New hydroboost brakes provide power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor is now standard. New options include electronic traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. A major upgrade was made to the tahoe for 2003 for increased safety and reliability: gm's stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available, enhancing comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. The brakes were improved. tahoe dazzles its passengers with entertainment possibilities. Xm satellite radio delivers cd-quality music, radio, sports, and other programming coast to coast. A rear dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones keeps the kids busy. lineupchevy tahoe is available in ls and lt trim, plus there's a z71 off-road package. Two v8 engines are available, the vortec 4800 and the vortec 5300. More important is the difference in torque: the 4800 develops 295 pounds-feet of torque, vs. 330 pounds-feet for the 5300, both at 4000 rpm. Tahoe ls is available with 4wd 37,000). The 5. 3-liter v8 is optional 700). Z71 also includes many of the same comfort and convenience items as the lt: the driver information center; bose nine-speaker stereo with rear audio controls, dual headphone jacks, and steering-wheel controls, power heated mirrors with turn signals and ground illumination; onstar; leather seating surfaces; power front bucket seats with heat and memory; adjustable head restraints; and an inboard armrest. walkaroundchevy tahoe is an attractive truck, though it doesn't stand out with its conservative and familiar styling. It is essentially a shortened version of the chevy suburban and shares much in common with it. the tahoe is the same width as the suburban. The tahoe is more than 22 inches shorter than the suburban and nearly 9 inches shorter than the ford expedition. The tahoe is nearly 11 inches shorter than the stretched, midsize chevy trailblazer ext (and about 5 inches longer than the standard trailblazer), but the tahoe is 4 inches wider than the trailblazer ext. big outside mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. The mirrors on lt and z71 models feature puddle lamps that light up the perimeter. Press a button and they fold in for parking in narrow places. Heating elements keep off frost and ice. The left mirror automatically dims to reduce headlamp glare. Choosing between them is a matter of lifestyle and personal preference. On the ls, cargo doors are standard, and the hatch a $250 option. On the lt, the hatch is standard. Cargo doors are more convenient when towing and for other truck chores, and they make it easier to control a dog. The traditional hatch is made of aluminum for light weight; being able to open just the glass is often more convenient when loading groceries or outdoor gear, especially since it can be operated with the keyless remote. New seats, a new center console, a new instrument panel, new hvac controls, and refinement throughout resulted in an improved environment for driver and passengers. there's plenty of headroom and legroom in the tahoe. The front seats are big, wide and, in the lt, fully adjustable. Optional seat heaters are easy to turn on and adjust. Switchgear is nicely designed and easy to operate. The map lights can be aimed. Rubber lined cubbies on the center console offer places to organize odds and ends. The ashtray can be removed to reveal another nice cubby for sunglasses and stuff. Cup holders are well designed. Three power outlets in front and one in back deliver electricity for accessories. Visibility is very good through big windows, but we'd like the option of an electronic park-assist feature to help maneuver this big rig in tight quarters. we appreciated the available power-adjustable pedals. Pressing a button moves the brake and accelerator pedals for an optimum driving position. This allows a shorter driver to move farther from the steering wheel where the airbag is located. The tilt steering could use finer adjustments, but by adjusting the height and tilt of the seat it's possible for drivers of all sizes to find a comfortable position. Steering wheel-mounted controls add convenience and enable the driver to personalize functions. we love the lt's electronically controlled, automatic three-zone hvac system for its sophistication and ease of use. Change the driver's temperature, for example, and a panel displays the new temperature for a few moments, then display's the passenger's temperature, then displays the driver's temperature again. It's easy to operate the controls with the big knobs and a clear led display that's easy to understand. Rear electronic temperature controls improve comfort for second- and third-row passengers and pets. the standard setup is a manual-control hvac system with three zones that allows temperature differentials of 30 degrees between driver and passenger. More performance, more nostalgia with new impala ss. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a roomy and practical car, a mid-size sedan that handles well, yet rides more like a big luxury car. Acceleration with the optional 3. 8-liter v6 is more than adequate. But for those who want more, chevrolet has added a supercharged impala ss model for 2004. the chevy impala is calculated to push the nostalgia button. By any other name, it would be an impressive, significant car. But chevrolet chose to honor an icon of the 1960s, not only with the impala name, but with key visual cues. from 1958-65, the impala was the flashiest full-size chevrolet, a real working-man's cadillac, tame transportation in its base form, with performance options available to match its sleek styling. Among those performance options, starting with the '61 impala, was the ss, or super sport, package, featuring unique, sporty trim inside and out. The supercharged 3. 8 that comes with the new ss model makes it quicker still. In any form, the impala feels more responsive than the six-seat sedans from toyota, dodge, ford and buick. The base impala runs with a 3. 4-liter v6 rated at 180 horsepower. The more up-market ls comes with gm's proven and highly competent 3. 8-liter v6, producing 200 horsepower. Abs is available as a stand-alone option 600) with the base 3. 4-liter engine. A driver's-side side-impact airbag 350) is available on all impalas. Xm satellite radio 325) is optional on all impalas. Onstar is available as a stand-alone option 695), but comes with several packages. walkaroundthe 2004 chevrolet impala looks bigger than it is, thanks to its upright windows and roof pillars and relatively long greenhouse. The impala is shorter (by about 4 inches) than a dodge intrepid. The impala matches the intrepid in most front-seat dimensions, but comes up a little short in the rear. the impala's most distinctive styling cues are its headlight and taillight clusters, which use a unique combination of round lights clearly visible from behind trapezoidal covers. Body-color side moldings (new for 2004), aluminum wheels and a small deck lid spoiler help distinguish the ls from the base model. on the ss model, the rear light covers are masked in body color, so only the round lights show through. This conjures memories of the 1960 ('62-'63 particularly) impalas whose round taillights were set in bright metal panels. the reborn ss also wears a lowered front fascia with integral fog lights, unique 'diamond-cut' wheels, dual stainless exhaust tips, and a racy airfoil on the rear deck lid. Again, credit the high roofline with relatively vertical sides. The impala's designers also carefully shaped the rear bulkhead, and moved the front seats slightly outboard. The noticeable distance between the driver and the front-seat passenger contributes to the impression that the impala is huge inside. the seats have been re-styled for 2004, with new upholstery for most models. Base models come with a three-passenger split bench seat in the front, with individual seats and a console offered as an option. They feel like bucket seats. Ls and ss come standard with the individual seats and console. Exclusive ss instrumentation includes a boost gauge to monitor the supercharger, and the ss instrument panel is trimmed in graphite. in all impalas, individual temperature controls allow the driver and front-seat passenger to create their own microclimate. The controls have been redesigned for 2004 for a more contemporary look. Chevrolet claims that airflow is better, too, in both heat and air-conditioning mode, although we hadn't noticed that it was lacking before. the impala's rear seating position is comfortable and relatively high, which makes it easy to get in and out. The impala has good shoulder room in the rear seats, but doesn't have as much headroom or legroom as a ford taurus or dodge intrepid. There are three shoulder belts in the rear, as well as latch child-seat tethers. Press the button and a human operator responds, to provide directions and other assistance. The toyota avalon feels bland by comparison. the view out of the impala is good, helped particularly by the small quarter windows that split the rear pillars. The creases on the hood are useful for judging just where the front of the car is, which in turn is handy for parking a big car in compact spaces. The rear deck lid seems high, however, so care is required when backing up. handling is surprisingly quick and sharp. This is not the wallowing, live-axle barge from the 1960s. Yet the ride is well-damped and does a good job of filtering noise, vibration and harshness. One reason is the impala's extruded aluminum engine-cradle subframe, which isolates vibration while allowing for a more rigid structure. A monster dashboard bulkhead made of light and strong magnesium further enhances to the impala's rigidity, giving the car a robust feel. The engine cradle and dashboard structure lock the steering shaft down tightly, so there are no excess wiggly movements. Chevy says a novel link between the steering column and the steering gear contributes to better on-center feel at the wheel. All impala models benefit from anti-roll bars front and rear, hardware associated with sports sedans. on the road, the steering provides good feedback, better than the toyota avalon's steering. The ls we tested felt particularly precise, with its quicker steering ratio. likewise, the brake pedal feels firm and responsive. Chevy claims the impala ls can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 7 seconds, quick for this class. There's just enough torque steer, fe. 2004 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. An american sedan to take on japan. introductionchevrolet has completely redesigned its highly successful malibu for the 2004 model year. The only thing that carries over from the old malibu is the name. Every screw, nut and bolt is new on the 2004 malibu. The solid body structure and supple suspension result in a quiet cabin and comfortable ride yet allow spirited driving. We were impressed with the power of the available v6. On the outside, the new malibu is not a raving beauty but it is better looking than the previous model, which sold well despite its plain appearance. The interior is a mix attractive, quality trim used in some areas and cheap plastic in others. If history is any indication, the new malibu should offer good quality construction, however. The previous malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class two consecutive years in the j. Power initial quality surveys. starting at just under $19,000 and topping out at about $25,000, malibu prices are extremely competitive with prices of the honda accord and toyota camry, which can easily top $25,000. lineupthe new malibu lineup brings far more variation in body styles, powertrains and trim levels than before. The 2004 malibu is being introduced as a midsize sedan. Early next year, a hatchback crossover version with a longer wheelbase goes on sale as the malibu maxx. the sedan comes in three trim levels: the base malibu 18,370), ls 20,370) and lt 22,870). Ls and lt versions come with a new 3. 5-liter v6. Head curtain side airbags, which we recommend highly, are optional for base and ls models 395), but come standard on the lt. the mid-level ls and top-of-the-line lt come with standard the v6 engine (and abs and traction control). A unique option available on the malibu is the remote starter 150), useful both in cold climates to warm up the car before the driver climbs in and in extremely hot climates to cool it down. chevrolet predicts the new malibu will prove to be the safest midsize car, but at press time it had not been crash tested by the government. Engineers used high-strength steel in specific areas of the body and created energy-absorbing crush zones in the front and rear. the malibu is equipped with dual-stage front airbags, three-point safety belts for all occup. walkaroundthe 2004 chevy malibu is not a gorgeous car, but its exterior appearance is vastly improved from its tupperware-bland predecessor. The new malibu has more character and class than the 2003 model. It also appears to be more substantive, giving the impression it is a more expensive car than it is. Indeed, it is slightly wider than the model it replaces. the back end of the malibu sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars. The european touch should not be a surprise since the malibu's underbody is shared with its german and swedish cousins, the opel vectra, and the saab 9-3. the front features a chrome bar across the full-width of the car, with the familiar chevy bowtie in gold in the center. The bar along with the headlamp shape are attempts to create a family resemblance with the chevrolet trucks, which have been so successful in the marketplace. The translation doesn't work as well on smaller cars. It appears as if chevy designers are still trying to come up with a consistent car and truck styling theme. interiorthe new malibu is equally substantial inside. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, it is extremely roomy for five passengers. The seats are comfortable. The front seat cleverly folds flat for carrying long objects such as skis. the rear seat is a 60/40 split folding one. It further has requisite power outlets. The interior is conservatively styled but everything is logical and easy to use. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving. the biggest problem with the interior is its inconsistency. Some interior parts used extremely high quality materials, such as the soft rubber door handles, which reminded us of volkswagens, the benchmark for interiors. Yet, other parts, such as the plastic surrounding the audio and climate controls, appeared cheap. The ceiling area above the visors was lumpy, the edges of the ceiling fabric where it was supposed to tuck into the trim was ragged, the handle for the lumbar support flimsy and the seat fabric puckered. Still, we didn't feel the interior materials and workmanship, in general, measured up to the craftsmanship of a honda accord or toyota camry. a neat feature is the remote starter system, useful for starting the car from inside the house when it's very cold or very hot outside. To start the malibu, press the lock button on the remote key fob, then press and hold the remote start button for one and one-half seconds. The two-step process is designed to prevent accidental activation. It also ensures the vehicle is locked (it can be unlocked by pushing the lock button again on the key fob) and the anti-theft system engages. The remote start system receives an ever-changing radio frequency code, intended to thwart thieves, from the key fob. The vehicle turn signals flash once and the parking lights turn on when the vehicle engine begins running. To drive away after a remote start, the vehicle's ignition key must be placed in the switch and rotated to the run position. The key lets the anti-theft device know it is the proper one and allows the vehicle to run normally. If the driver doesn't drive off after 10 minutes, the engine shuts off. The car can be re-started with the push of the buttons again. The engine can be stopped by remote by pressing the remote start button on the key fob, engaging the hazard switch on the malibu's dashboard or turning the ignition key to the off position. The architecture serves as the basis for the highly successful opel vectra in germany, and the swedish-made saab 9-3. S., epsilon also will.
